Ringing in the New Year with Your Furry Friend: A Guide to Preparing Dogs for the Festivities

As we gear up to bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new one, it’s essential to ensure that our four-legged companions are also ready to join in the festivities. New Year’s celebrations can be overwhelming for dogs due to loud noises, bright lights, and unfamiliar activities. In this guide, we’ll explore some tips to help you prepare your canine friends for a safe and enjoyable New Year’s Eve.

Create a Safe Haven

Dogs can become stressed or anxious during New Year’s Eve celebrations, primarily due to fireworks and loud noises. Create a comfortable and secure space for your dog where they can retreat if they feel overwhelmed. This could be a quiet room with their bed, favorite toys, and perhaps a cozy blanket. Make sure the room is soundproofed as much as possible to minimize noise disturbance.

If your pup is staying with us at Vera’s, sending them with their favorite blanket or toys can help make sure they feel safe and comfortable.

Gradual Exposure to Noise

If your dog is not used to loud noises, start preparing them in the days leading up to New Year’s Eve. Play recorded fireworks sounds at a low volume initially and gradually increase it over time. Pair the sounds with positive experiences, such as treats or playtime, to help your dog associate the noises with positive outcomes.

Keep Them Occupied

Engage your dog with interactive toys or puzzle feeders to keep them occupied during the festivities. A mentally stimulated dog is less likely to be bothered by external stimuli. Provide them with treats or toys that require effort and focus to keep them entertained.

We have enrichment activities available which include lick mats, treat puzzles and snuffle mats.

Update Identification and Microchip Information

The hustle and bustle of New Year’s Eve can increase the likelihood of a dog getting scared and potentially escaping. Ensure that your dog’s collar has updated identification tags with your current contact information. Additionally, if your dog is microchipped, confirm that the information on file is accurate.

Maintain Regular Routines

Dogs thrive on routine, and sudden changes can be unsettling. Stick to your dog’s regular feeding and walking schedule as closely as possible. This consistency will provide a sense of normalcy and security for your pet during the celebratory chaos.

Consider Anxiety-Reducing Products

If your dog is prone to anxiety, consider using anxiety-reducing products such as calming vests, pheromone diffusers, or anxiety wraps. These tools can help provide a sense of security and comfort for your dog during stressful situations. We also have R&R CBD dog chews available to purchase at both our locations. These are a wonderful option to ensure your pup stays as calm as possible this New Years.

Consult Your Vet

If your dog has a history of severe anxiety or if you anticipate a particularly challenging New Year’s Eve, consult with your veterinarian. They can provide advice on specific products or medications that may help alleviate your dog’s anxiety.

By taking proactive steps to prepare your dog for New Year’s celebrations, you can ensure a stress-free and enjoyable experience for both you and your furry friend. Remember that every dog is unique, so tailor your approach to suit their individual needs. With a little planning and consideration, you can welcome the New Year with a happy and relaxed canine companion by your side. Cheers to a pawsitively wonderful New Year from all of us at Vera’s Posh Paws!
